What's in a Teaching Guide?

Each 8 to 12 page, illustrated teaching guide includes:

Objectives that include both cognitive and creative components.

Vocabulary that builds the student's understanding of art terms and concepts.

In-depth background information that lists the master artworks, provides
historical and geographical context, and discusses the surrounding formal,
political and social ideas.

Guided looking questions that focus the students' attention and critical
thinking skills.

Studio activity directions that list all materials and provide a step-by-step
outline.

Ideas for integrating art into other curricular areas that expand the reach of
art into mathematics, social studies, science and language.

Bibliography that cites both adult and student references.

Illustrations that aid comprehension for both the teacher and the students.

Each Art in the School teaching guide addresses the
following components to provide a comprehensive art
       education lesson:

Art history -- using master art works, within historical and geographical
context, to generate dialogue about art

Art criticism -- analyzing art works and visual images for meaning, including
description, formal analysis (identification of the use of design principles),
interpretation (explanation of the meaning of the work), and evaluation
(conclusion about the art work's expressive mode)

Aesthetics -- questioning the nature and function of art and beauty

Art studio -- creating art, which integrates the skillful manipulation of
materials, sensory awareness, design, problem solving, decision-making and
critical thinking
