Art in the School Philosophy: Our Approach to Art Education

We believe that children benefit the most from art education when it includes:

• art history – Using master art works, we place the art into historical and
   cultural context for children.
• art criticism – We teach children about the elements of art and the vocabulary
to describe what they are looking at so they may exam and respond to what
   they’re seeing.
• aesthetics - We help children evaluate the aesthetic qualities of art work so
they might understand the meaning, nature and value of art.
• art making – We teach children how to use basic art techniques and tools so
they can explore their creativity and express themselves beyond words.

Why Art in the School Was Created

Art in the School was founded by art historian Sara Otto-Diniz in 1985 because
art education funding was severely cut in the public schools. While some art
funding has been restored, many children still receive little or no art education.
This nationally recognized, non-profit program has reached thousands of
students throughout New Mexico who would otherwise not have any visual
art education.

Art in the School’s unique approach:

• addresses the whole child by supporting multiple learning styles
• fosters cultural understanding by studying multi-cultural arts and peoples
• develops critical thinking skills
• challenges students to solve problems creatively
• engages the imagination
• nurtures a positive self-concept
• allows all children be successful in the classroom

Join Art in the School and help provide these vital learning experiences
for more children in New Mexico.
